The Effects of the Particle Size Ratio on the Behaviors of Binary Granular Materials

The particle size ratio (PSR) is an important parameter for binary granular materials, which may affect the microstructure and macro behaviors of materials. However, effect on assemblies with different arrangements still unclear. To explore further clarify PSR in packing structures, three types numerical samples regular, layered, random are designed. Numerical results show that has significant effects regular packing. larger PSR, stronger strength, modulus, smaller angle between shear band load direction. And a theoretical solution peak stress vs. obtained packing, by DEM good agreement solution. Under layered little due to similar changing PSR. modulus slightly increased increase small grain content 50%, range 0.5–0.9, but range, leads greater modulus.
